We have a growing collection of 'serious' board games (developed by Focus Games) all designed to help staff and students deliver excellent patient care. The board, card and online games encourage structured discussion about specific performance, safety and change issues, and make learning fun.

The care certificate game
The game is an effective face-to-face learning and competency assessment tool for all health and social care providers. It helps to deliver the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competency and to manage the Care Certificate Assessment Process. The game contains 106 scenarios and questions specially designed to create discussions that test and deliver the knowledge required to achieve success in the Care Certificate. 1 x game board, 1 x dice, 2 x player counters, 1 x 60 second timer, 53 yellow and 53 red tokens, 106 care certificate question cards The game covers 8 of the 15 standards within the Care Certificate that are best suited to group reflective discussions. The standards covered in the game are: Duty of Care (14 questions); Equality and Diversity (10 questions); Work in a Person Centred Way (12 questions); Communication (10 questions); Privacy and Dignity (12 questions); Fluids and Nutrition (18 questions); Awareness of Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disabilities (14 questions); Infection Prevention and Control (16 questions). The game is also a visual competency assessment tool that reflects levels of understanding around each standard. A team's success at answering questions correctly is mapped with coloured counters on the board's radar chart reflecting their knowledge and understanding of each standard. The communication game
Description: This game has been created by NHS Education for Scotland to help those working in health and social care services to increase their knowledge and skills around communication and their ability to support people with diverse communication support needs. Suitable for anyone who interacts with service users, carers and families. This includes nurses, doctors, AHP’s, support workers, carers, volunteers, receptionists, social care and council staff. A team game that encourages structured discussion and offers practical ways to improve skills. It can be played by either single or multidisciplinary teams and allows participants to reflect on their experiences, acquire knowledge and learn from each other. Drug round game
Description: An engaging educational board game designed to help frontline healthcare professional to understand, recognise and minimise medication errors. It helps to improve players' understanding of what medication errors are, the impact they have and why they happen. It also helps to develop the knowledge and confidence that staff need to reduce the incidence of medication errors. The game is easy to set up and manage and is designed for between 4 and 12 players divided into 2 competing teams. Games usually last 45-60 minutes but can be made shorter or longer depending on individual preference. Suitable for nurses (both registered and student), junior doctors and pharmacy staff.
