Enquiry & Literature Search Services

We offer a specialised enquiry and literature search service.  All you need to do is let us know what information you need and we can do the searching for you.  We carry out complex searches on databases such as The Cochrane Library, Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO and NHS Evidence to find the best available evidence to support the work of NHS staff.  We aim to find the best available evidence to support patient care, public health, commissioning, service development, research and continuing professional development.

If you need information simply fill in our online form or contact us with details of your enquiry and we'll get straight back to you.

We also offer the following enhanced services:

Clinical Question & Answer Service
An enhanced enquiry and literature search service is available to GPs. The service aims to:
  • provide answers to questions using the best available evidence
  • search, appraise and briefly summarise the evidence
  • offer enhanced turnaround times with a minimum turnaround time of 6 hours
If you are a GP and would like an answer to a clinical question please fill in a Clinical Q & A Form and return it to us.

Evidence Based Digests

A new enhanced enquiry and literature service for health managers and commissioners. The service:
  • searches, appraises and briefly summarises the research
  • provides answers to questions using the best available evidence
  • offers a rapid response service with a minimum turnaround time of 6 hours
The service runs alongside our existing enquiry and literature search service which is available to all staff.

If you would like a digest of evidence please fill in a Digest of Evidence Request Form and return it to us or simply e-mail details of your request to us.

Knowledge Clinics
We now bring the enquiry and literature search service out to GP practices or individual departments in the form of Knowledge Clinics. The Knowledge Clinics are open to all staff within the practice or department.

By offering the service from within a GP practice/department we hope that we will make it easier for staff to use the enquiry and literature search service. We also hope that clinics will raise awareness of the literature search service so that when questions arise health professionals will ask the Library & Knowledge Service to carry out search.

How does a Knowledge Clinic work?
  • A clinic will be held at a practice or within a department
  • A Library & Knowledge Service professional will bring a wireless laptop, set it up in a central place such as a meeting room/conference room and staff can drop in with their enquiries.
  • The time and frequency of clinics will be agreed with the staff at the practice/department and the Knowledge Service will market the clinics.

Staff will be able to:
  • Request information or a literature search
  • Obtain advice on finding information or carrying out a literature search
  • Obtain an Athens username and password
  • Find out about clinical databases such as Medline
  • Find out about electronic books and journals
  • Find out about key healthcare websites
  • Find out more about the Library & Knowledge Service.

If you would like more information or are interested in hosting a Knowledge Clinic in your practice or department please contact us.
