Clinical Guidelines


Clinical guidelines are systematically developed statements designed to help practitioners and patients decide on appropriate healthcare for specific clinical conditions and/or circumstances.  Below are local and national guidelines but it also worth checking out speciality accredited clinical websites for specialised guidance such as Royal College of Anaesthetists or Royal College of Emergency Medicine

National and International Clinical Guidelines 

NICE - National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
NICE is part of the NHS, and its role is to provide patients, health professionals and the public with authoritative, robust and reliable guidance on current 'best practice'. The guidance will cover both individual health technologies and the clinical management of specific conditions.

NHS Evidence - NICE Guidelines can also be found on the NHS Evidence website which provides access to a wide range of authoritative clinical and non-clinical evidence and best practice.

NICE Pathways - NICE Pathways is an online tool for health and social care professionals that brings together all related NICE guidance and associated products in a set of interactive topic-based diagrams. Each pathway includes all relevant NICE guidance, including clinical guidelines, public health guidance, technology appraisals, interventional procedures, medical technology and diagnostics guidance, and quality standards, and accompanying tools produced by NICE to support implementation.

Map of Medicine - The Map is a web-based visual representation of evidence-based patient care journeys covering 28 medical specialties and 390 pathways

UK Clinical Guidelines - A portal site to guidelines from NICE, SIGN, GAIN, CKS and professional organisations on the Patient UK website.  

Knowledge Network (NHS Scotland) - Search for ‘Evidence and Guidelines’ on NHS Scotland’s Knowledge Network.        `

National Guideline Clearing House (US) - A US directory of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

The TRIP database is a free resource which aims to deliver the highest quality literature to support evidence based practice. Sign in with your OpenAthens account to access the Pro version. The content includes evidence-based guidelines from throughout the world.

SIGN - ​The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network develops evidence based clinical practice guidelines for the NHS in Scotland.
